Editors and project managers – The brains of E&M

Editors and project managers have special decision rights and responsibilities for managing the magazine. All of them together make up the editorial board, which is the control centre of E&M. It decides on all important developments from the content of the magazine to partnerships. If your application is successful you will join the editorial board and will be involved in exciting areas like:

  • creating the content of the magazine (e.g. editing a section of the magazine, from coming up with article ideas and giving feedback to authors to uploading articles to the web platform; discussing and amending editorial guidelines)
  • organising the magazine (e.g. running editorial SKYPE conferences and meetings)
  • forging partnerships and networks (e.g. communication and negotiations with partners, participation in meetings and conferences)
  • over-seeing funding and spending with regard to the magazine and related projects (e.g. writing funding applications)
  • planning and running workshops, conferences, trainings, and other activities (from concepts to actual events)
  • spreading the word about E&M (e.g. writing press releases, managing the facebook page, producing promotion material)
  • developing the website (e.g. programming and managing the website)
  • selecting new team-members (e.g. reviewing and interviewing applicants)

The combination of tasks depends completely on your personal interests and strengths - you can combine some editing work with some project management work, or focus completely on project management, or devote yourself to improving our website.

You should typically expect a work load of about 7-15 hours per week, depending on your specific tasks, the current status of projects, and your personal ability to commit time to the project.

"Being an editor has definitely taught me as much as my Masters degree did - most of all, it's taught me a lot about working together. 'Team work' isn't just something you're born knowing, you have to figure it out gradually - and E&M is a great place to do that."
